When the 'heartless' HR officer got replaced by the Happiness and Experience officer!
When the 'heartless' HR officer got replaced by the Happiness and Experience officers!
CEOs are so obsessed with HR, and you see it all the places, from KPMG India to now Deloitte India. Deloitte India's Chief Happiness Officer is a Chartered Accountant who worked for the initial 17 years with a PSU, then joined Deloitte India as a Senior Manager (yes, after 17 strong years post-a CA qualification). She works on client projects related to her qualifications and experience, and one day she gets chosen to play the role of the Chief Happiness Officer!
Deloitte India's Chief Talent and Experience Officer is an HR lady by all her education and experience in HR!
CEO Romal Shetty in this interview calls that position Chief Talent and Experience Officer, but her title, as you can find on her LinkedIn profile, is "Chief People and Experience Officer!"!
I believe SV Nathan was Deloitte India's Chief Talent Officer till a few months ago, when he exited Deloitte India.
From this video:
So, you don't use the term HR? asked the interviewer!
CEO Romal says, "I use a lot of heart!
Further, he adds, I have a Chief Talent and Experience Officer and a Chief Happiness Officer!
Romal is not the first Indian CEO who takes pride in refurbishing HR.
Some years back, KPMG India MD/CEO Richard Rekhey, too, had made an audacious announcement that he was going to give India CHRO role now to not someone with HR background but someone who has worked closely with people on many successful projects! He claimed that no one knows what people want and what they are capable of other than one of the most successful client project leaders! Here enters Shalini Pillai, a shiny CA and a senior client delivery leader! He was the CHRO for KPMG India for a good 5 years.
We are all still very curiously waiting to know, how did this experiment go, both for MD Richard, CHRO Shalini, and the people of KPMG India!
What we very clearly saw was that, after Shalini's 5 years as CHRO, she was succeeded by an outsider (not from KPMG India) who has all education and all experience, only in HR! 😅 .
A few quick questions for all of you:
1. Why didn't Romal or Rekhy themselves take over the role of the CHRO as an additional charge?
2. What may have forced KPMG India to make a U-turn? Romal may be interested to know, right?
3. What magical word after "Happiness" and "Experience", do you think will soon rock HR? You create one such word, and these CEOs will create a new position for you! 😁
4. Who was the CHRO of HCLTech, when Vineet Nayar led India's only corporate Organizational transformation, making huge upside-down changes to people practices? Check and let me know if his book; "Employees First, Customers Second: Turning Conventional Management Upside Down!" mentions the name of the CHRO!
